Jaguar has released a teaser image of the C-X17, A crossover design study that’s set to preview an all-new, modular aluminium architecture that’s destined to feature in a number of future JLR models – the firm’s 3 Series rival among the number.
Information regarding the Jaguar C-X17 specifications has yet to emerge, but Jaguar claims that the architecture it’s showcasing illustrates “the diversity of vehicles that could be produced using this architecture, which underpins the innovative future of Jaguar.” This includes the company’s plan to eventually adopt aluminium architecture in all of its upcoming models within the next four years.
The smallest iterations of the new modular platform, which can be expanded to accommodate vehicles between 4,5 and 5,2 metres in length, will for the underpinnings of Jaguar’s 3 Series rival. The larger application already underpins the current Range Rover and will also form the foundations of the next-generation XJ and Discovery.
Given the nature of the showcase model, it’s been widely speculated that the platform could also accommodate compact crossover and full-size SUV models. It would give Jaguar the model diversity to further challenge the likes of the German Big Three, all of whom feature broad model portfolios. Whether this would potentially tread on Land Rover’s toes could be the deciding factor in such a prospect.
