The first day of the Johannesburg International Motor Show (JIMS) has kicked off and already a couple of manufacturers have revealed some stunning cars, some of which are concepts, but a few others are very important new models destined for our shores.
GM
The morning kicked off at the Chevrolet stand where General Motors showed the Opel Astra GTC (132 kW from a 1,6-litre turbocharged petrol) and the new Chevrolet Utility bakkie.
The star of the display, however, was the Chevrolet Miray Concept. Using a hybrid powertrain with compact dimensions, it could possibly show not only future design cues that will be coming from Chevrolet, but also the powertrains it will implement in the future.
Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz gave the sleek SLS AMG Roadster its local unveiling. Finished in matte silver and with black wheels this roadster certainly stood out. Remember that CAR attended the international launch and you can read all about it in the upcoming November issue.
It is the Concept A-Class that is the real star of the MBSA stand. Already unveiled on an international level, this concept also gives us a glimpse of this Stuttgart based company’s future design language, especially in terms of compact hatches.
Other highlights on the stand that visitors shouldn’t miss are the C63 AMG Coupé as well as the B-Class F-Cell that took part in the company’s F-Cell World Drive. The new AMG Coupé will soon form part of AMG’s local lineup.
Celebrating its 125th birthday, Mercedes-Benz South Africa CEO and president talked about the company’s future and its goal to keep offering mobile solutions to drivers.
More updates to follow.
