The Mini John Cooper Works and the Mini John Cooper Works Clubman that were unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year will be available in South Africa from August 2008, while the Clubman version will arrive here in March 2009.
A 1,6-litre four-cylinder unit with Twin Scroll turbocharger and direct injection powers these zippy Minis, and pushes out 155 kW at 6 000 r/min and 260 N.m between 1 850 and 5 600 r/min. An overboost function allows the torque figure to be bumped up to 280 N.m. Performance figures show that the zero to 100 km/h dash can be completed in 6,5 seconds for the Mini JCW, while the Clubman version uses and extra 0,3 seconds to complete this sprint. Both Minis can carry on to reach a top speed of 238 km/h.
According to BMW, “both models are also fitted with extensive motor racing technology as standard” that includes 17-inch light alloys shod with 205/45 run-flat tyres, light and high-performance brakes, a new exhaust system and the modified six-speed manual transmission. Driver aids include ABS with EBD, Cornering Brake Control, Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control and hill-start assistance.
The cabin of these JCW-touched Minis feature leather three-spoke sports steering wheel, and can be individualised to suit everyone’s tastes. A CD player, AUX connection, and an optional interface for an Apple iPod connection provide entertainment in these vehicles. A navigation system with a six and a half-inch TFT colour display is available as an optional extra, as well as a mobile phone preparation or integrated hands-free facility with Bluetooth interface and USB connection.
When it arrives, the Mini JCW will retail at R291 000, while the Mini JCW Clubman will cost R306 500.
