‘We will arrest you if you drive drunk’, is the message from KwaZulu-Natal traffic authorities, who have increased the number of roadblocks.
Department of Transport spokesman Logan Maistry said that after more than 1 200 people died on SA’s roads during the festive season he was planning tough action all year round. The province had the highest number of deaths.
“We had a meeting and decided to increase the enforcement on our roads. We are holding regular roadblocks and, though the officials will be looking at all traffic offences, we are targeting drunk driving,” he said.
“Since January 1 more than 150 people have been arrested in the Durban area alone for drunk driving. This is a blatant disregard of road rules. We would have thought after the high death toll during the holidays more motorists would be more careful on the roads. Maybe they assume there will be fewer traffic officials on the roads now that the festive season is over, but this is not the case. We had 10 roadblocks in the province (excluding the number in the Durban area) this weekend and will continue to target drunk driving,” he said.
“We are not saying that people cannot drink, we are just saying do not drive if you have had too much to drink,” said Maistry.
Maistry warned KZN motorists that traffic authorities will step up law enforcement even further ahead of the Easter holidays.
