Belgian fighter pilot Rudi Thoelen won a Range Rover after triumphing in the Challenge in Utah in April. He beat 15 men and women in the four-week-long global adventure, which included 4×4 precision driving, kayaking, running, climbing, abseiling and mountain biking in remote areas. South Africa’s Chester Foster finished ninth.
The two new expedition-ready G4 Edition Land Rovers go on sale from September 1 in Europe.
G4 Edition Defenders and Discoverys come with a selection of specialist expedition equipment and convenience features. Specification highlights include A-frame front protection bars, front and rear lamp guards, new black mogul “technical” fabric seats, special colour schemes including brrego yellow and tangiers orange, air-conditioning and a CD player.
Additional features on the Defender include 16″ alloy wheels, a windscreen protection bar and black chequer plating on vehicle wing tops and sills. The Discovery comes with 16″ alloys, lockable roof-rack cross-bars for additional equipment security, cruise control and self-levelling suspension.
“The first Land Rover G4 Challenge was the ultimate global adventure which took place in some of the world’s toughest terrains. These new and very well equipped vehicles embody the spirit of this adventure and will enable many budding explorers to re-live the experiences of our G4 Challenge heroes,” said Land Rover managing director Matthew Taylor.
G4 Edition Defenders, available in both the 90 and 110 station wagon wheelbase options, start at about R280 000, and the Discovery is available from about R328 000. There are no plans yet to bring the vehicles to South Africa.
