The new Legacy, recently launched in South Africa, has shrugged off competitors like the Mazda RX-8 and BMW 5 Series to emerge as Japan’s Car of the Year.
President and CEO of manufacturer Fuji Heavy Industries, Kyoji Takenaka said: “It is our greatest pleasure to receive the most prestigious award of Car of the Year Japan, 2004. We designed the Legacy to be ‘unique and emotional’ to satisfy those who love cars and love the feel of exceptional driving performance all over the world.”
The Legacy scored 368 points, ahead of the Toyota Prius on 322, Mazda RX-8 on 238, Honda Odyssey, 116; Jaguar XJ, 60; Audi A3, 55; BMW 5 Series, 22; Nissan TEANA, 7; VW Touareg, 7 and Volvo XC90, 5.
In the new Legacy, Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), has addressed areas like the body construction, chassis, design and engine. Since the vehicle’s Japanese launch earlier this year, healthy sales figures have been recorded and sales exceeded 10 000 units in one month.
As reported in CARtoday.com earlier this month, Subaru has also been doing very well in the Australian market, while here in South Africa, the Legacy has been well received by the market.
