The second-generation M-Class has been around since 2005, so in order to keep the mid-size SUV looking fresh for its market despite its 300 000-strong sales success, the big-wigs in Stuttgart have decided its time for a facelift.
The 2008 facelift includes a redesigned front bumper, restyled headlamps, a new grille, new rear bumper with reflector strips and new taillights with a smoked glass look. Interior enhancements include a new two-tone leather interior and new four-spoke leather steering wheel.
Although there are no new engines in line-up, fuel economy has been slightly improved by 0,4 litres per 100 km. LED tailights, rectangular chromed exhaust outlets are among the optional extras, as well as a choice of alloy wheels that range from 17 to 20-inch rims.
New options include a 12-speaker Harman Kardon Logic7 sound system and rear seat entertainment system with two eight inch screens, a DVD player, two wireless headphones and two remote controls – plus a Linguatronic voice-operated control system.
Standard features are Mercedes’ own safety systems, Pre-Safe and Neck-Pro head restraints and roof racks. The new multimedia interface system allows Bluetooth hands-free calling and an auxiliary connection for mobile music players. An optional Media interface allows for interaction with devices like an iPod via the vehicles steering wheel controls and displays.
As the range-topping model, the ML63 AMG receives its own share of upgrades. These include new front and rear bumpers with chromed underguard, a larger AMG grille in high-gloss black with chrome detailing, bi-xenon headlamps, aluminium-look roof racks and new 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in 295/40 R20 tyres with optional 21-inch examples also available. Mercedes-Benz’s AMG Speedshift 7G-Tronic transmission splits power 60/40 between the front and rear wheels.
