An image of Maserati’s upcoming luxury SUV concept has leaked onto the internet ahead of the car’s official unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
The image, which appears to have been scanned from a preliminary show brochure, shows a vehicle with Maserati’s signature ovoid grille and a more prominent take on the swept-back headlamps featured on the company’s GranTurismo models.
Although the picture only gives so much away, it does appear that the new car will not adopt a typically boxy SUV profile and will instead feature a more curved GT-esque shape similar to that of BMW’s X6.
The Maserati SUV will be underpinned by the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee and will be built at Chrysler’s Jefferson North assembly plant. Power is likely to be provided by a modified version of Maserati’s 4,7-litre V8 engine developing 335 kW and a 3,0-litre V6 with more than 223 kW is slated for the European market – both of which will be mated with an automatic transmission.
The as-yet unnamed Maserati SUV will be aimed squarely at the likes of the Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover, as well as Bentley’s upcoming SUV, when it goes on sale during 2013.
