Former Sauber driver Felipe Massa this week said that team boss Eddie Jordan was keen to sign him for the 2003 season.
The young Brazilian, who came under fierce criticism for his wild driving tactics in the 2002 season, told that the Silverstone-based team boss wanted him in a EJ 13 next year and that he was very confident that a deal could be struck.
“It’s all decided. Eddie Jordan wants me in his team,” Massa said. “I am very confident about the 2003 season. I am focusing on F1 racing 100 per cent. Should I not get a racing contract, I will sign on with one of the top teams as their test driver.”
At this stage it appears as if the major battle will be between Massa and former Jordan, Ferrari and Jaguar Racing driver Eddie Irvine for the most competitive seat left in next year’s championship.
As CARtoday.com reported this week, Irvine has also been linked to the drive because Jordan is desperate to find a new title sponsor to replace Deutsche Post. Benson and Hedges is thought to be willing to up their ante if a British driver was allocated the seat in place of Japanese rookie Takuma Sato.
