Felipe Massa set the pace on the second day of testing at Jerez on Wednesday. In the first of his two half-day sessions at the wheel of a BAR 006, South African Alan van der Merwe was 12th fastest.
In Sauber’s second outing on Michelin tyres, Massa’s fastest lap of 1m17,513s was 0,7 seconds faster than that of Jarno Trulli in the Toyota.
However, Massa benefited from being out when conditions were best. The day began overcast and damp, dried over lunch and rain fell again in the afternoon.
Trulli was almost two seconds ahead of Mark Webber in the Williams-BMW. The Australian was 0,2s ahead of the leading BAR Honda of Enrique Bernoldi.
Ferrari was in action for the first time after fog at Fiorano scuppered the Scuderia’s plans to test in Italy on Monday: Luca Badoer finished fifth and Marc Gené eleventh.
Takuma Sato finished sixth in the BAR Honda ahead of Vitatonio Liuzzi’s Red Bull, Ralf Schumacher’s Toyota and Nick Heidfeld in the Williams-BMW. On his debut test for the BMW-powered team, Heidfeld completed 87 laps and was ninth fastest.
Former British Formula Three champion Alan van der Merwe was twelfth ahead of the two Dutchmen trying out for Jordan – Christijan Albers finished 0.8s ahead of compatriot Robert Doornbos.
Van der Merwe, Adam Carroll and James Rossiter will each have two half-day sessions in the BAR this week. The Brackley-based team said it was “looking for the driver who has the most potential to develop over the next 24 months”.
