The 2008 Jeep Cherokee was recently launched in New York and will arrive in SA during the second quarter of next year. Will the much-more-macho newcomer build on the popularity of its predecessor?
The new Cherokee is built on the Dodge Nitro’s platform and maintains its 4×4 pedigree by offering two Jeep “Trail Rated” four-wheel-drive systems – Command-Trac and the all-new Selec-Trac II. It features an all-new independent front suspension, new five-link rear suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. These new features allow for an improved on-road ride and handling.
The exterior of the new Cherokee has been given a more rugged look and clearly incorporates some of the Commander’s styling cues. The interior is said to offer increased storage space and greater seat comfort.
In order to give Cherokee drivers the “Only in a Jeep” open-air experience, an all-new Sky Slider full-open canvas roof will be offered as an option. Other features include electrically-adjustable seat and mirrors with memory function, remote start, rain-sensing wipers and one-touch power windows.
The powerplant for the new Cherokee is a 3,7-litre SOHC V6, which produces 157 kW of power at 5 200 r/min, and 319 N.m torque at 4 000 r/min. In the US, this new model is available with either a six-speed manual- or four-speed auto’ transmission, but we expect a 2,8-litre four cylinder CRD turbodiesel and a smaller petrol engine will also be offered on the local market.
Safety features for the new Cherokee include Electronic Stability Program, Electronic Roll Mitigation, All-speed Traction Control, brake assist, advanced anti-lock brakes, tire pressure monitoring, and side-curtain airbags.
New technology in the new Cherokee will include the MyGIG Multimedia Infotainment System… A completely integrated audio, navigation, entertainment and hands-free communication system, MyGIG includes a 20-gigabyte hard-drive which can store music and photos. Will it be available in SA? Time will tell.
“The new range will most likely mirror the current Cherokee line-up,” said Richard Sloman, DaimlerChrysler SA’s PR Manager. That means that chances are high that both the new Jeep Cherokee Sport and Jeep Cherokee Limited will be available in South Africa.
