Mazda confirms no rotary engines in their plans

Fans of Mazda’s legendary RX sports cars look away… yes, it’s been confirmed that the Japanese company will not be considering a rotary engine in future performance models.

Said Mazda’s CEO Masamichi Kogai, “We don’t have that kind of vehicle in our future product plan. If you increase the number of segments, then the resources we can allocate to each will decline and that will prevent us from developing truly good products.”

Those products he is hinting at centre around Mazda’s new Skyactiv technologies that include efficient, naturally aspirated engines, lightweight bodies, and sporty chassis tuning.

Die-hard rotary heads might not want to hear this, but it’s worth noting that after Kogai-san took over the reigns in mid-2013, Mazda has just turned over its first annual profit in five years.
