One of the world’s most popular sportscars, Mazda’s MX-5, started its next lifecycle this week when the first brand-new model rolled off the Japanese production line on Tuesday.
The first new MX-5 produced was a North America-bound limited edition model finished in Velocity Red with a red interior. It is fitted with a 16-valve, 2,0-litre powerplant mated with a six-speed manual gearbox.
This third-generation model is the first to be mass-produced at Mazda’s revised Ujina plant situated near the company’s global headquarters in Japan.
“A new car launch is always a critical and exciting event for any car company,” said Hisakazu Imaki, president and chief executive of Mazda Motor Corporation. “But the launch of a brand icon like the MX-5 is particularly special. This is a great moment for all Mazda employees-and a great day for car enthusiasts around the world.”
The new MX-5 was first revealed to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in March, where its purposeful curves and meaner front-end impressed many. The car’s design has been heavily influenced by the Ibuki concept first seen at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2003.
The MX-5 continues its winning streak after the Guiness Book of World Records last month recertified it as the best-selling sports car yet. When production of the second generation was completed in December last year, close to 720 000 vehicles had already been built and, with the car’s track record, many more can be expected.
