The last McLarens to wear the GTR badge were a series of McLaren F1 race cars built specifically for the world sportscar championship. Indeed one of them even won Le Mans outright in 1995.
Some 20 years on and the new track version of McLaren’s mighty P1 hybrid now also gets the hallowed three letters at the end of its name and the limited-run McLaren P1 GTR will go into production once the 375th and final example of the P1 road car has been completed.
Powered by a 722 kW version of the P1’s hybrid powertrain, the GTR will, say McLaren, have even greater levels of performance, grip, aerodynamics and downforce than the road car. That means racing slicks, a widened track and more aggressive and distinctive styling designed to improve aerodynamic performance.
The cost? An eye-watering £1.98m. That’s R35.86m… not including any import taxes that may be levied.
Before you start waving your cheque book around though, you should know that the GTR will be offered to existing P1 customers first and they will be building far fewer than the P!’s 375 production run. For their £1.98m, new GTR owners will also get a tailored programme that include exclusive consultations with the McLaren driver fitness team and Design Director Frank Stephenson, access to one of the McLaren racing simulators, and participation in a minimum of six dedicated international drive events to be held at some of the world’s most iconic Formula 1 circuits.
