McLaren is readying what many consider to be a successor to the much-vaunted F1 hypercar for an unveiling at this year’s Paris Motor Show.
A teaser image showing what looks like a low-slung hypercar slipstreaming through neon-accented wind tunnel smoke has sparked a veritable slew of reports hinting at near-hyperbolic performance and output figures. A run of 500 units has been projected, with each car tailored to the customer’s requirements by McLaren Special Operations – the same team responsible for the quirky X-1.
The common thread running through these initial reports are that the new car (tentatively dubbed P28 or MP4-28C) will feature an uprated version of the MP4-12C’s 3,8-litre V8 tuned to develop 599 kW at a peaky 9 100 r/min. This, in turn, will be augmented by a KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) that will deliver an additional 120 kW for a combined output in the region of 720 kW.
It’s also been speculated that the P28 will weigh in at around 1 225 kg and will feature active aerodynamics: features that will help propel the car from standstill to 100 km/h in 2,8 seconds and on to a top speed of roughly 384 km/h.
More concrete details should emerge closer to the car’s official unveiling in Paris later this month.
