Gauteng transport MEC Khabisi Mosunkutu has said unroadworthy taxis must stay off the province’s roads after finding vehicles in a bad condition at the Government pound. One taxi had a clutch pedal hanging loose.
Mosunkutu visited the pound on Tuesday after taxi owners said their vehicles were being impounded unfairly. The MEC said he would go to the pound to inspect the state of the impounded taxis.
“There were 88 taxis in a shocking condition,” the MEC’s spokesman, Sizwe Matshikiza, told the CARtoday.com.
“One vehicle had a clutch pedal hanging loose, another did not even have a proper accelerator pedal, there were doors that could not close and one taxi had a knife stuck between its seats,” he said.
There were also vehicles with rags stuck into the petrol tank where the petrol cap was missing and seats that were completely loose.
“We cannot even understand how these vehicles were being driven before they were impounded by traffic officials,” said Matshikiza.
“The MEC said the deparrtment would ensure that vehicles that were in such a shocking condition would not be allowed back on the road,” he said. “The government will not allow unroadworthy vehicles on our roads and we will continue to impound vehicles that are doubtful,” Matshikiza concluded.
