The SUV-coupe scene has been steadily picking up over the last few years with the BMW X6 paving the way. Now it seems that BMW’s countryman, Mercedes-Benz, is also set to join the fray with the debut of its GLE-Class Coupe at the Detroit Auto Show early next year.
The all-new GLW-Class Coupe, in essence an M-Class with coupe-like styling, will also debut in AMG-guise, with Mercedes-AMG planning on bringing two variants to the Show: a high-performance- and a less extreme “AMG Sport” variant.
The high performance AMG variant (pictured) will adopt aggressive styling, with unique design cues being a set of intakes in the front bumper, an A-wing front splitter, and angular quad exhaust tips.
Keeping up its latest trend in naming its products, Mercedes-AMG will in all likelihood name the new vehicle “Mercedes-AMG GLE63 Coupe”
Based on the same platform as the Mercedes M-Class (which will be renamed to GLE-Class), the GLE-Coupe may either be equipped with the twin-turbocharged 5,5-litre V8 found in the current ML63 AMG, or Mercedes-AMG’s new twin-turbocharged 4,0-litre V8. The 4,0-litre V8 will replace the 5,5-litre unit at some point.
Power output for the new model have not yet been made public, but it is expected that it will match or exceed the current ML63 AMG’s 386 kW and 700 N.m, with drive being sent to all four wheels. The 4Matic all-wheel-drive system will feature a rear-biased setup.
The Mercedes-AMG GLE-Coupe will aim to take the fight to the BMW X6 M, high-end Porsche Cayenne variants, as well as the upcoming Range Rover Sport SVR.
