After much hype and videos of heavily camouflaged test mules, Mercedes-Benz has released details of its SLS AMG Black Series.
The highlights include an increase in power output, a higher rev limit, improved aerodynamics and a number of weight-saving measures.
Engine
Whereas the standard SLS AMG delivers 420 kW, the 6,2-litre naturally-aspirated V8 in the Black Series has been modified to produce 464 kW and is capable of revving to a heady 8 000 r/min. Torque is slightly down from that of the standard car from 650 to 634 N.m. Although the Black Series will reportedly shave a tenth or two off the standard car’s 3,8 second 0-100 km/h time, the top speed of 315 km/h is 2 km/h down on that of the standard car.
Handling
Mercedes’ engineers have strived to improve the level of handling performance through a 20 mm/24 mm increase at the front and rear tracks respectively. The 20-inch forged alloy wheels fit neatly over the standard ceramic brakes and, as can be expected, a great deal of carbon fibre has been utilised for such components as the front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser. In addition, the titanium exhaust system is 13 kg lighter than that of the the standard version.
The interior has been shorn of weight-adding addenda such as the Comand system, while the standard battery has made way for a lithium-ion item that’s 8 kg lighter. The standard seats have also been replaced with lightweight sport seats.
In total, AMG has shaved 70 kg off the recently updated SLS AMG GT, meaning that the Black Series tips the scales at 1 550 kg.
Mercedes-Benz SA wasn’t able to confirm if the Black Series will be coming to our shores.
