Mercedes-Benz has given the public a sneak preview of its SLS AMG GT – a limited-edition model that ushers in upgrades to the powertrain, transmission and suspension that should justify the GT moniker.
This model makes use of the engineering know-how gleaned from the company’s SLS GT3 racer and will be offered in both roadster and tin-top body styles.
The 6,3-litre V8 engine receives a shot in the arm that sees the power output rise from 420 to 435 kW at 6 800 r/min while the torque remains at 650 N.m. This should see the SLS AMG GT crack the zero-to-100 km/h run on 3,7 seconds with 200 km/h coming up just 7,5 seconds later. The top speed is electronically limited to 317 km/h.
Mercedes has recalibrated the change logic and electronic controls for the 7-speed AMG Speedshift transmission to serve up quicker shifts when the manual shift mode is engaged. Thanks to an ECU re-map that changes the torque delivery in manual shift mode, the transmission’s automatic double-declutching function becomes more pronounced during downshifts.
The suspension set-up now incorporates an AMG Adaptive Performance Suspension module that comprises electronically adjustable dampers working in conjunction with the existing aluminium wishbones all round. The result is a firmer overall set-up that further reins in body roll.
In terms of exterior changes, the GT features darkened headlamps, black gloss finishes for the front wing “gills” and bonnet vents, GT decals and model-specific 20-inch alloy wheels shielding red brake callipers.
Aside from a custom AMG Performance steering wheel, gloss black facia trim finishes and red seatbelts, little appears to have changed in what is already a snug and sporty cabin.
Mercedes-Benz South Africa has denoted the GT as a limited-edition model and is awaiting confirmation as to its inclusion to the local SLS AMG line-up. Should it get the green light, it would arrive here by the end of 2013.
