The new Audi A6 will break cover at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show and as these pictures show, the Ingolstadt mid-ranger borrows from the conservative looks of its big brother, the A8.

When CARtoday.com published spy pictures of what appeared to be a pre-launch A6 test car in January, which was photographed near the Arctic circle, it seemed certain that the new A6 would get a Nuvolari-inspired single-frame grille with an outer chrome ring, grey cooling fins and horizontal chrome strips.

That particular vehicle showed off typical Audi cues such as an arched roofline, high waistline, shallow side glass and prominent geometric wheelarches. Judging from these recently-released official A6 pictures, the test car hasn't changed much (with the exception of the rectangular wraparound rear lights).

The A6 measures 4,92 m in length, 1,86 m in width and 1,46m in height. According to Audi, the wheelbase of the new Audi A6 is up by 83 mm over its predecessor, shoulder room at the front is up by 23 mm, with an extra six millimetres at the rear. The luggage capacity on both front-wheel drive and quattro models is 546 litres.

The new Audi A6 will enter the market initially with a total of five power units fitted in longitudinal arrangement - three petrol and two TDI engines. Six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions will be offered. The 4,2-litre V8 engine produces 246 kW and 420 N.m, the new 3,2-litre V6 FSI 188 kW and 330 N.m and the 2,4-litre V6 130 kW and 230 N.m. The two diesel engines, a three-litre TDI V6 and two-litre TDI, produce 165kW and 450N.m and 103 kW and 320 N.m respectively.

Adaptive air suspension or sports suspension (with the body lowered by 20 millimetres) will be offered options. In addition, the new A6 will also feature xenon dynamic adaptive light technology and a daytime driving lights function.

Inside, standard trim and finish include aluminium inlays and wheels. The Multi Media Interface "MMI basic" comprises not only a 16,5-cm monochromatic display, but also a fully integrated radio complete with a CD player and four loudspeakers.

Automatic air conditioning offers separate air distribution and temperature control for the driver and front passenger, but also indirect ventilation, centre air vents with separate temperature control, and an air humidity sensor system. Further features are the residual heat function, automatic air recirculation, and additional rear seat ventilation through the door pillars.

Steering wheels with either three or four spokes are available in wood or leather and may be fitted as an option with multifunction keys for operating the MMI as well as gearshift paddles.

Safety equipment includes the latest generation of ESP, brake assist and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), front and side airbags, sideguard head airbags. The two full-size front airbags are activated in two stages, depending on the severity of an accident. Active front head restraints fitted as standard help to protect the occupants in a collision from behind.
