Those eagerly awaiting Alfa Romeo’s pocket-sized rocket, the Mito GTA, get ready to apply some tissue to cornea…It looks as though the project has been abandoned.By Gareth Dean
In an interview with an unnamed Alfa Romeo spokeswoman has stated that the “Mito GTA has been put on hold”. She continues “it’s hard to justify building such a high-performance car at this present time as the financial crisis means that it’s not economically viable. And, sadly, it may never be”.
The Mito GTA first appeared in concept form at the Geneva Motor Show. A turbocharged 1,8-litre engine with direct fuel injection and variable-valve timing was set to endow the car with 179 kW while a host of suspension upgrades and electronic driver aids, including a ‘Skyhook’ system similar to Maserati’s, were thought to be earmarked for this model.
This leaves the turbocharged 1,4-litre model tested in the August issue of CAR to defend Alfa’s reputation of producing fiery small cars – it’s going to be a tall order…
