Soul, Cerato, Sorento, Sportage, Koup and now Kia has launched two all-new models onto the world stage. The Korean automaker debuted the all-new Optima and Forte at last week’s New York Auto show.
The Optima – also known as Magentis in some markets – is Kia’s D-segment competitor and competes directly with models such as Honda’s Accord, VW’s Passat and the Mazda6. The stylish, coupé-like saloon clearly boasts the new familial design cues as purported by Kia’s design chief Peter Schreyer. It is certainly sporty in appearance, replete with BMW-style fender vents.
Based on an all-new platform the Optima rides on MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link layout at the rear with anti-roll bars fitted on either ends. Several engine options are available across world markets, including a 2,0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that develops 202 kW for North America. It is unlikely that South African Kia fans will have access to this powerplant as the local engine line-up will most probably comprise of 2,0- and 2,4-litre petrol four-pots, delivering 122- and 131 kW respectively. Power is delivered to the front wheels via six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.
Debuting alongside the Optima is the Cerato hatchback. This model is the third Cerato model after the saloon and Koup. Apart from the practicality aspect this five-door version is lower, features a new front grille, alloy wheels, lower valence design, center console. Expect the local Cerato hatchback engine line-up to echo that of its saloon sibling.
A Kia spokesperson confirmed that both models are headed for SA, and will probably be launched close to the end of 2010.
