New vehicle sales figures indicate more people are foregoing used cars to purchase new, a trend which BMW Approved Used Cars hopes to buck with its adjusted enhanced-value packages.

At a briefing held in Stellenbosch on Tuesday, Pavla Benguric of BMW Approved Cars said that though the ratio of used cars sold in comparison to new was 0,7 to one unit, the programme was constantly evolving to offer the best selection to customers.

BMW Approved Used Cars has announced some changes to the programme, though these changes will only affect its BMW operation. The used Mini component remains unaffected and continues to receive a one-year or 25 000 km warranty.

Used BMWs now come with a two-year/40 000 km Motorplan and with the Used Mobility contract, the Motorplan on a BMW can be extended to a maximum of seven years or 200 000 km. All BMWs sold can now be no more than five years old and have a mileage no higher than 160 000 km. Though older cars were offered, the group found that the demand for these cars was very limited, and decided to focus its energies on newer models that were in greater demand.

The Used Mobility Contract covers the repair of most major components including the engine, gearbox, drive shaft and the electrical engine components. The contract also includes all scheduled services.

The vast majority of Approved buyers in 2003 remained male (80,3 per cent), while the average age of buyers increased from 40,6 years to 42,2 years old. Occupationally, the greatest increases in buyers were professionals and people occupying managerial positions. Buyers employed in sales and marketing in 2002 accounted for 10 per cent of the Approved sales while in 2003, this figure slumped to less than one per cent.

Wary of the vulnerable position used car dealers find themselves in, every four months the programme is adjusted using the input of dealers. Currently selected 3 Series, 5 Series and 7 Series models are offered at prime less five per cent through BMW Financial Services. Recently, 3 Series touring models were added to the Subvention scheme to offer prospective buyers greater value. All vehicles are subjected to a vehicle quality and mileage check and the services of BMW Group on Call included.
