The upcoming Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet has been spied wearing very little disguise ahead of its official unveiling later this year.
As these pictures from Autocar show, the new car retains the electrically folding fabric soft-top configuration and sports hints of the company’s E-Bugster concept – especially with its lower windscreen surround, high waistline and rear detailing.
Like its coupe sibling, the Beetle Cabriolet will be manufactured at VW’s Puebla plant in Mexico and will probably feature a similar engine line-up. The powerplants include a 1,2-litre TSI petrol unit developing 75 kW, a 1,4-litre TSI with 118 kW and a 147 kW 2,0-litre TSI. A 1,6-litre turbodiesel developing 75 kW and equipped with engine start/stop and other BlueMotion eco-friendly paraphernalia could also be considered.
The Beetle coupe will go on sale during the first quarter of 2012 – expect the Convertible to follow towards the end of this year or possibly early 2013.
