BMW has just launched its new 1 Series hatchback in South Africa.
The engine line-up includes a 1,6-litre four-cylinder petrol unit in that pushes out 100 kW at 4 400 r/min in the 116i, as well as a 125 kW 1,6-litre petrol engine with 250 N.m in the 118i. Both feature TwinPower turbocharging. The 2,0-litre turbodiesel is offered in the 120d and also makes use of TwinPower turbocharging. The engine develops 135 kW and 380 N.m of torque. Despite its improved performance compared with the previous 120d, the car’s average fuel consumption has been lowered to 4,5 litres/100 km and the CO₂ emission level is 119 g/km.
When compared with its predecessor, the new 1 is 85 mm longer (with a 30 mm longer wheelbase) and is wider by 17 mm, while its height remains unchanged. The result is not only a more spacious cabin, as well as a bigger luggage area (which has grown by 30 dm³).
