A new record was set at a Bonhams auction in California on Thursday when this 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta sold for $38 115 000! At today’s rand-dollar exchange rate that equates to a monumental R402 million!
The car had the perfect history to justify its premium, however. It has been in the same family for 49 years, was raced in Italy, came second in the 1962 Tour de France, plus it has been maintained throughout its life and never received a full restoration. The latter fact is especially important to some prospective collectors.
The festivities for the Pebble Beach weekend are far from over though. All three international auction houses, Bonhams, Gooding & Company and RM Auctions have their individual auctions which started yesterday and which will end on Sunday.
