Pictures of the upcoming five-door Opel Corsa indicate that clever design practices have again been used to set the three- and five-door models apart, while the clever retractable “FlexFix” system has been incorporated for the first time.
Like its larger Astra siblings (five-door and recently launched three-door GTC), the new Corsa will also be available with two separate body styles and two distinct personalities. The three-door Corsa has the more active character, while the five-door model has the added bonus of space for various family and leisure activities.
One such innovation is the “FlexFix” system, which makes its first production appearance on the five-door Corsa. Previewed on the Opel Trixx concept, the “FlexFix” system folds out from beneath the rear underbody to carry two bicycles. The carrier system simply folds back into the bumper when not in use.
DualFloor is another clever feature allowing the double cargo floor to be set at two height positions for horizontal partitioning of the luggage space. The rear seat backs fold forward to provide an extended luggage area with a flat load space.
Among the changes are significant steps to introduce new ways of designing vehicle interiors.
At the recent opening of the new GM Europe design studio, vice-chairman Bob Lutz called Opel’s interiors “cold” and “emotionless”, but vowed that they would soon become “a lot warmer and more dramatic”.
Lutz said the changes would be visible within a couple of years and would include “broad curves, modern shapes and great use of colour”, reported.
“We are experiencing a real renaissance in interior design at General Motors, and Opel is very much a part of that,” Ed Welburn, GM vice president of global design, said.
GM’s fourth-generation Opel Corsa represents the next phase of this campaign (which started with the Astra), and promises a high-quality interior; fun, translucent control knobs and switches; and greater overall ambience.
The handsome new Corsa will début on July 18 at the British Motor Show.
