In its 53-year history, CAR magazine has had six editors. With current editor John Bentley’s imminent and well-deserved retirement, it was time to get a new person in the driver’s seat. Hannes Oosthuizen has been appointed as the new editor of CAR.
Hannes has been fascinated with cars from an early age and owned his first CAR magazine when he was just seven-years-old. As a way of getting into the world of motoring, he studied journalism and set his eyes firmly on becoming a motoring scribe.
Hannes joined the CAR team in 2001 as a staff writer, and in 2002 he became an associate editor. He landed the job of deputy editor in 2006 and has worked under the guidance of John Bentley since then. Hannes claims that CAR magazine ignited his passion for both cars and magazines, so to be put in charge of this prestigious publication represents coming full circle for him.
In his years at CAR Hannes has experienced things that many petrolheads can only dream of. Examples of these include some time behind the wheel of a Renault F1 car, a trip to Japan to visit the famed Diakoku Futo where modified cars of all shapes and sizes meet, attending motor shows all around the world and a trip up the coast in some of the quickest supercars available locally.
When asked of his vision for the future of the brand, Hannes is clear about is ideas.
"My intention is to build on CAR's respected position as the authority on motoring matters in South Africa, and to increase the excitement and entertainment levels, across all our platforms."
