A Detroit icon returns with the unveiling of an all-new Ford GT supercar. Recent rumours were confirmed when its Executive Chairman Bill Ford pulled the covers off at the Detroit Auto Show.
It’s no concept either, say Ford, with a production version scheduled for next year and a full racing itinerary that includes the GTLM category of United SportsCar Championship and the GTE category of the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The real surprise is under the hood. Unlike its illustrious GT40 forebearers, there is no V8 under the hood. Instead, powering this Ford is a twin-turbo V6 EcoBoost that transfers its (aropund) 450 kW via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The engine is derived from the 3.5-litre unit used by Ford’s Daytona Prototype that took part in the 2014 United SportsCar Championship.
The lightweight chassis is constructed of carbon-fibre and aluminium – carbon-fibre passenger cell with alloy front and rear subframes – as well as making use of active aerodynamics in the deployable rear spoiler.
Befitting its supercar status, the doors swing upwards giving you access to seats integrated directly into the carbon-fibre passenger cell. Adjustable pedals and steering compensate for the fixed seating.
