CAR has managed to secure the local pricing and line-up of the third-generation Mini ahead of its local launch in May. With the international launch happening in Puerto Rico this week, the indicative figures are subject to change because of the exchange rate.
The range starts with the Cooper. Its features a 100 kW/220 N.m (230 N.m on overboost) 1,5-litre, three-cylinder turbopetrol that consumes a claimed 4,5 litres/100 km in the combined cycle and emits just 105 grams of CO2 every kilometre. It hits 100 km/h in 7,9 seconds and reaches 210 km/h.
Standard features on the local version will include a multifunction steering wheel, 16-inch alloys, climate control and an audio system. This version will retail for R279 000.
The Cooper S boasts a four-cylinder 2,0-litre turbopetrol that develops 141 kW and 280 N.m (300 N.m on overboost) and hauls the boutique hot hatch to 100 km/h in 6,8 seconds before topping out at 235 km/h. Its claimed average consumption is 5,8 litres/100 km and it emits 136 g/km of CO2.
Standard features on the Cooper S include 17-inch wheels, a Performance Control module that is designed to counteract understeer, sport seats, LED auto lights and wipers, dual-zone climate and cruise control. Its price will be R342 000.
A six-speed Steptronic automatic transmission will be available on both models – commanding a premium in the region of R17 000 over the manuals.
