With the arrival of the first-generation RAV4 back in 1994, Toyota can be credited for kick-starting the now lucrative segment of the compact SUV. Since then Toyota has sold more than 4,5 million RAV4s in over 150 countries. In South Africa this potentially oversubscribed segment offers the public more than 15 choices and the previous generation RAV4 lost favour to more modern and spacious newcomers towards the end of its lifecycle. Toyota hopes to rectify the situation with the arrival of this new model.
Styling
The styling follows the current Toyota design language as portrayed by the new Auris and lends the vehicle a more sporty and youthful appearance – both inside and out. Dimensions have grown slightly in all directions (except height) and result in a more spacious vehicle with increased luggage space. The wheelbase has grown by a significant 100 mm.
Powertrains
An all-new 2,5-litre VVT-i petrol engine is added to the list of existing powertrain configurations with an power output of 132 kW and 233 N.m of torque. The derivative equipped with this engine is offered only with a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Toyota claims a fuel consumption figure of 8,5 litres/100 km for this model.
The 2,0-litre petrol model is offered with manual and CVT options, and develops 107 kW. Both 2,0-litre petrol models feature front-wheel drive only. The 2,2-litre turbodiesel model (110 kW) is only offered with the six-speed manual transmission and features all-wheel drive. Toyota claims a seven per cent improvement in consumption for this model.
Improvements over third generation
According to Toyota, the levels of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) have been improved. Safety is now at an EuroNCAP 5-star level and the new model offers a new function called cornering control which aids handling by using yaw feedback to alter the engine torque to individual wheels.
The cabin is a marked improvement, with particular focus on material quality and seating comfort (greater range of adjustment on driver’s seat and steering wheel). Toyota also claims improved outwards visibility. Rear space is now claimed to be class-leading and the use of thinner front seatbacks further improve legroom for rear passengers. Open the new tailgate (now top-hinged and without a spare wheel) and you’re greeted with a large luggage space of a claimed 547 litres.
Trim levels
Two trim levels (GX and VX) are offered. GX models featureroof rails, 17-inch alloys, and Daytime Running Lights (DRL) on the outside and power windows, remote central locking, manual climate control, a touch-screen Multi Information Display incorporating a stereo system, steering controls, retractable tonneau cover with net barrier and rear Park Distance Control (PDC) inside.
Externally the VX adds a chrome insert in the front bumper, front and rear mud flaps, power retractable side mirrors, a moon roof with tilt and slide function, and High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps with cleaning system. Interior features include full leather upholstery, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, front seat heaters, automatic dual-zone climate control, a reversing camera display, a powered tailgate with memory function, cruise control and a keyless entry system (Smart Entry).
