Niche-finding Munich-based BMW is at it again. This time the Bavarian brand seems to be planning a new coupe crossover based on the next-generation X1, dubbed (obviously) the X2.
According to Auto Express, the X2 will be offered in two or three-door bodystyles, offering all the hallmarks of BMW’s current crop of Sport Activity Coupes, including a slanted roofline and bulging wheelarches. The X2 will use the same platform as the forthcoming new X1 and the recently launched 2 Series Active Tourer, meaning it’ll be offered in front- and all-wheel drive configurations.
As the accompanying image suggests, the X2 will feature elements from the Vision Future Concept like narrow headlamps, pronounced angles and enlarged kidney grille – as BMW adopts a new design language.
The engines offered in the X2 will include a turbocharged 1,5-litre 3-cylinder engine and a wide range of diesel units, including a 1,5-litre 3-cylinder and 2,0-litre four-cylinder. There’s also talk of a range-topping 220 kW four-cylinder turbopetrol that’ll enable a halo X2 to take on the likes of Audi’s RS Q3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG.
With the next-generation X1 expected to go on sale early in 2016, the X2 might follow as little as a year later.
