Despite the very recent introduction of Volkswagen’s Golf 7, the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer is reportedly hard at work developing the next generation of its best-selling hatchback – the Golf 8.
Apparently, one of the key areas the VW engineers are focusing on is efficiency – particularly because of the European Union emissions legislation that will come into effect in 2020.
Built on the new MQB platform, the Golf 8 will benefit from the aerodynamics research done on the XL1 and as a result will be lower and wider than ever before. Also, VW is aiming to shed even more weight from the Golf’s mass – sources suggest that the Golf 8 will weigh less than 1 100 kg.
The Golf 8 will also boast a number of new technologies that will aid it in being extra efficient, such as transmission decoupling and engine shutdown whilst being driven downhill or during deceleration.
