Ford has unveiled what it calls a Figo Concept at the Auto Expo in New Delhi. Whereas the previous model was a reworked Fiesta, the Concept indicates Ford is giving the Figo an identity of its own. It is built on the same B2E platform as the EcoSport – a car that’s also a good seller in India.
Although a concept at this stage, we expect a production version of this car to roll off the factory floor before the end of the year. And will it come to South Africa? We certainly hope so, but word from Ford SA is that at the moment it remains a concept and they have no current plans for the launch of a production version in here.
As one of the top 10 auto brands in India, it makes sense for Ford to launch the car on the sub-continent’s growing market. Small and compact cars dominate Indian vehicle sales where, for example, the Suzuki Alto and Swift are by the far the best selling vehicles. This is where the Figo Concept slips in perfectly. It is not a hatchback neither is it a full sedan, but rather fits in somewhere in the middle. And according to Indiatoday the sub-4-metre sedan segment is one of the fastest growing in the market. Ford definitely wants a slice of this pie.
