The affordable crossover segment now has a new contender in the form of GWM’s C20R, which is based on the C10 hatchback – launched here just more than a year ago. With stiff competition in the likes of Renault’s Sandero Stepway, does GWM’s offering have what it takes to woo South African consumers?
The C20R distinguishes itself from its stablemate with a new front end, especially the redesigned grille and airdam, with integrated foglamps and SUV-style scuff plate. The profile is further enhanced through the increased ride height (a total 172 mm), roof rails, and black wheelarches that house 16-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, the C20R is well equipped. Standard features include air conditioning, electric windows and mirror adjustment, multifunction steering wheel, height adjustable headlamps, rear park assist and a radio/CD player with MP3 compatibility and auxiliary/USB inputs. To optimise driver comfort, the steering column is height adjustable as well as the driver’s seat.
To opimise storage space, the boot boasts a dual-floor design, while the rear bench features fore-aft sliding as well as folding seatbacks.
The C20R is powered by the Chinese company’s 1,5-litre four-cylinder petrol motor that features variable valve timing. The normally-aspirated unit produces 77 kW at 6 000 r/min and 138 N.m of torque at 4 200 r/min, and sends drive to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. GWM claims a 7,7-litre/100 km combined cycle fuel consumption figure as well as a CO2 emissions figure of 179 g/km for the C20R.
On the safety front, the C20 R is fitted with dual front airbags, with ABS, EBD and EBA managing stopping power on all four disc brakes. The little ones are catered for with Isofix mounting points in the back, as well as child-lock door. There’s also an alarm and immobiliser fitted as standard.
The GWM C20R is priced at R154 900 (including VAT and emissions taxation) and comes with a three-year/100 000 km warranty, three-year/45 000 km service plan and a 24-hour roadside-assistance programme for two years.
