Update: As is the case with A45 AMG super hatch, Mercedes-AMG has also released a Mercedes-AMG C63 S Edition 1. There is no mechanical upgrade, but a host of cosmetic updates in the cabin as well as on the exterior.
For some buyers the standard C63 might just look a little subtle, that’s why the Edition 1 offers 19-inch forged, matte black AMG wheels with neat (motorcycle-inspired?) red lining.
At the front there are red accents added on the mirrors and the radiator grille. At the rear the Edition 1 receives a small boot spoiler.
In the cabin the seats – front and rear – as well as the door trim receives red, diamond pattern stitching while the seatbelts offer the corresponding colour.
Following short on the heels of the Mercedes-AMG GT unveiling earlier this month, Mercedes-Benz has pulled the wraps off its newest super sedan, the Mercedes-AMG C63.
Under the hood, as we’ve already known, is the M177 4,0-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine. This engine is very similar to the M178 engine found in the Mercedes-AMG GT. However, here the standard (read non-S) C63’s V8 is tuned to deliver 350 kW and 650 N.m, which is 11 kW and 50 N.m more than the standard Mercedes-AMG GT. But, Mercedes-AMG will also offer you a C63 S. This model offers a 375 kW/700 N.m version of the engine, the highest output we have seen to date. Although the power figure matches that of the GT S, the torque figure is 50 N.m up.
The result is that the claimed 0-100 km/h acceleration time of the C63 AMG S sedan is the same 4,0 seconds as the standard Mercedes-AMG GT! Mercedes-Benz claims an average fuel consumption as low as 8,2 litres per 100 km.
Standard equipment include AMG’s ride control unit while that all important mechanical rear locking differential will be useful exciting every corner. The C63 will also be offered with dynamic engine mounts, again a feature carried over from the Mercedes-AMG GT.
Torque will be send to the rear wheels via the AMG speedshift MCT 7-speed sport transmission. This system will offer the driver four programmes, controlled efficiency, sport, sport + and race. Note that the latter will only be available on the S model.
If you think the C63 looks wider than the standard C-Class, you are not mistaken. The front wings are widened by 14 millimetres. The rear of the car is finished off by four exhaust pipes and a neat rear diffuser.
The previous C63 AMG sedan and estate was Mercedes-AMG’s best selling AMG model to date, and it is quite clear that the company plans to continue the trend with this new range.
Expect the C63 to arrive in South Africa towards the latter part of the first quarter of next year. The estate will only follow a few months later.
