In three weeks’ time Chevrolet will release what it calls the “all-new” Spark at the Seoul and New York Auto Show.
Originally launched in India in 2009, the current Spark is available in 71 countries, with South Korea, the USA and Mexico topping the chart in terms of sales.
The Spark is also a local favourite, with 586 units sold in February. Predictably, over a quarter of all buyers are under the age of 35.
Michael Simcoe, GM international vice president of design had the following to say: “The new Spark’s design has evolved and grown up with the segment. The youthful whimsy of the original Spark is still in its genes, but it is conveyed in more traditional proportions that reinforce the customer’s refined expectations”.
No further details were made available, although we assume the range will be made up of a combination of new and old drivetrains. This means, we could see the Spark being launched with the 55 kW, 1,0-litre, three-cylinder engine that will also do duty in the Opel Karl.
We would expect to see the arrival of the new Spark in South Africa before the end of the year.
