The 2015 Smart ForTwo and ForFour have officially been revealed. It will reach local showrooms towards the end of 2015/beginning of 2016.
Boasting an all-new design, the new-generation Smart cars have a bold front end with a honeycomb grille, large headlights and a narrow front air intake with foglights. The rear ends of these new small cars differ significantly from one another. The ForTwo gets a small boot lid with integrated number plate housing, while the ForFour’s hatch opening plays host to a large smart badge with the number plate housing lower down on the bumper.
Inside you will find a two-part facia – an outer section which can optionally be covered with fabric, and a large, concave inner section incorporating the functional elements. There’s a clear circular theme about the cabin with round air-vents and round edges everywhere. It looks to be a simple and straightforward design for a hassle-free experience.
The two-door version measures in at 2 690 mm long, 1 660 mm wide and 1 550 mm tall with a wheelbase of 1 873 mm. The bigger four-door model has a wheelbase of 2 494 mm and is 3 490 mm long.
There will be a few new engines available when the Smart launches internationally. The three-cylinder naturally aspirated 999 cc unit develops 52 kW and 91 N.m of torque. The turbocharged 898 cc unit pushes out 66 kW and 135 N.m at 2 500 r/min. A 45 kW petrol engine will extend the range later down the line. These units can be mated with a five-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Internationally, there will be three equipment lines – passion, prime and proxy. Standard features across the range include LED daytime driving lights, central locking with radio remote control, cruise control with limiter and electric windows in the front. Depending on which pack you choose, other equipment could include a leather multifunction steering wheel, an instrument cluster with colour display, heated seats and a JBL audio system.
Safety features include driver airbag, driver kneebag, front passenger airbag and side airbags, crosswind assist (standard), forward collision warning (option) and lane keeping assist (option).
