The first generation SX4, though largely under-appreciated, was a breakthrough vehicle for Suzuki. It came with a high level of standard specification in a solid package that offered a comfortable ride quality and all-round competence. It set the benchmark for the second-generation SX4 – one that has now gone on sale locally.
Overall, the new SX4 has grown from its predecessor’s proportions – it’s 165 mm longer, 10 mm wider, with a 100-mm increase in width. Think of it as Nissan Qashqai size and indeed will go directly up against the second-generation Qashqai when it launches here in early August.
Design-wise its a more sophisticated vehicle too with a lot more creases and sharper styling elements that all contribute to a more mature appearance. The large headlamps incorporate LED daytime running lights and there’s a brushed metal finish on the lower section of the front and rear bumpers, as well as the side skirts.
The cabin demonstrates a concerted effort to improve the SX4’s perceived quality (even though the previous model wasn’t particularly lacking in this area) with a soft-touch facia and metallic trim that contrasts with the sombre charcoal cloth upholstery. Standard features includes a cruise control, Bluetooth audio and MP3 compatibility, while on the safety front there’s ABS with EBD, and electronic stability programme and seven airbags.
The increased size has also led to more room in the cabin, with more legroom for rear passengers (helped by a revised shape of the front seatbacks). Both the driver and front passenger seats boast height adjustment, while the steering column can be adjusted manually for rake and reach.
Suzuki claims the SX4 can swallow 430 dm³ of luggage, with a massive 1 269 dm³ freed if the two rear seatbacks are folded flat.
The SX4 is powered by a 1,6-litre four-cylinder engine with variable valve timing that produces 86 kW at 6 000 r/min and 156 N.m of torque at 4 400 r/min. There are two transmission options with this normally aspirated motor – either a CVT or a five-speed manual gearbox. There are two AWD variants, which use the company’s AllGrip four-wheel drive system, and three front-wheel drive models.
