Ferrari’s entry-level offering, the California, has been the recipient of forced induction – benefitting from a turbocharged V8 that will make its international debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Along with the new powerplant, there’s also a raft of new features.
While the new model, dubbed California T, retains the same basic shape of the outgoing California, such as the retractable hardtop, a few details courtesy from the Ferrari Styling Centre and design house Pininfarina emphasize its flanks and front spoiler – while a revised diffuser has found its way to the rear end.
In the cabin there’s a new high-resolution 6,5-inch infotainment with a touch-sensitive screen that sits mid-facia – as well as the new Turbo Performance Engineer (TPE) system, which is mounted between the centre air vents and relays information about the engine’s performance and advises the driver how to maximize the motor’s potential.
But of real importance here, is the turbocharged V8 that powers the California T. Ferrari claims outstanding performance and the most exciting turbocharged soundtrack ever. The new, turbocharged, direct injection 3,9-litre produces 412 kW at 7 500 r/min and 755 N.m of torque at 4 750 r/min – which Ferrari claims should allow for a zero to 100 km/h sprint in 3,6 seconds and a top speed of 316 km/h. The Maranello-based manufacturer also believes that thanks to the California T’s Variable Boost Management system, there’s virtually no turbo lag. Despite its performance potential, the California T emits 20 per cent less harmful gases into the environment – achieving a 250 g/km CO2 rating.
To cope with the added grunt, the steering and suspension set-up have been tweaked to provide faster response (thanks to a new steering box) and reduced body roll and pitch (courtesy of new springs and new Magnaride dampers). The California T also boasts the latest version of Ferrari’s F1-Trac traction control system – to improve corner exit pace.
