The first official images of the Volkswagen Golf 7 GTI concept have emerged ahead of the car’s Paris Motor Show unveiling. Although it wears the ‘concept’ moniker, it is likely to remain largely unchanged for production.
Sitting 17 mm lower than the standard Golf 7 and clothed in the instantly recognizable GTI addenda (read honeycomb grille, red pin striping, dual-tone alloys in a choice of 17- and 18-inches and twin exhaust pipes) The Golf 7 GTI concept is evidence that the production car is likely to remain in a similar vein to its predecessor; being more about balance and comfort than outright power.
The cabin is also a subtle evolution of the current formula that throws in such features as a golf ball-inspired gear knob, flat-bottomed steering wheel, chronograph-style dials, red mood lighting, retro-flavoured tartan seat panels and aluminium finishes for the pedal boots.
Power is provided by a 2,0-litre TFSI turbopetrol engine developing 164 kW and 350 N.m of torque. The production car will also be offered with a performance pack that will bump the power output up to 171 kW. In its standard guise, the GTI will return an average fuel consumption figure of 6,6 L/100 km.
According to Volkswagen, the standard DGS-equipped GTI will crack the 0-100 km/h sprint in 6,6 seconds on the way to a 246 km/h top speed. Factor in the performance pack and the GTI will shave 0,1 seconds off the dash to 100 km/h while raising the top-end to 250 km/h.
The production-spec volkswagen Golf 7 GTI will go in sale in Europe early next year with a likely local landing date of mid- to latete-2013.
