Last year Volkswagen showed us its Taigun Concept. Now another, updated, concept has surfaced at the Auto Expo in India. Little has changed. According to VW, one of the power sources will be (as previously reported) a new 1,0-litre TSI engine developing 81 kW and 175 N.m.
To use an extract from VW’s press release:
“The Taigun debuts in India with new boot lid and outside-mounted spare wheel.”
The the spare wheel was moved from inside the car to the outside, owing to customer demand. That is understandable, as you don’t want to unpack the entire car before you have access to the spare wheel.
A spokesperson from VWSA couldn’t comment whether the Taigun would make it to our shores. However, we will definitely not bet against it. Over the past year or two we have seen a significant rise in market demand for compact SUVs along the line of the Renault Duster, Ford EcoSport while new comers like Datsun is also developing a competitor.
It is no secret that South Africans love SUVs, and we would predict that the production version of the Volkswagen Taigun will make its international debut before the end of the year.
