For the future SLK-Class Mercedes-Benz has developed a new, light-weight six-cylinder engine to guarantee sports car driving enjoyment of the highest level.
For the future SLK-Class Mercedes-Benz has developed a new, light-weight six-cylinder engine with an output of 200 kW and 350 N.m of torque.
According to the manufacturer, the maximum torque is available from 2 500 r/min up to 5 000 r/min.
In addition, this 3,5-litre power unit, with its aluminium crankcase and cylinder head, has weight-reduced connecting rods, pistons and balancer weights. Cylinder liners are of aluminium and silicon for especially low friction, distortion and weight.
The V6 engine also has variable intake and exhaust camshaft adjustment to increase the output and torque while contributing to fuel economy. From 1 500 r/min the new V6 already develops approximately 87 per cent of its maximum torque of 350 N.m.
The intake ducts are equipped with newly-developed tumble flaps which aid in reducing the fuel consumption of the V6 engine by up to 0,2 litres per 100 kilometres depending on engine speed.
The engine's acoustic properties were a further point of focus. The aim of the Mercedes engineers was a specific reduction in engine noise, followed by the achievement of a sporty and resonant six-cylinder exhaust note.
With the new SLK on its way following the international launch at Geneva in March, it should be entertaining to see what the new weapon in the three-pointed star's armoury holds.
