Nissan SA will shortly notify owners who could be affected by a problem that makes some engines hard to start or suddenly stop, following Nissan Japan’s announcement of a global recall.
The Japanese-based company recently said it would recall a total of 2,56 million vehicles, including about 1,53 million sold abroad, to fix an engine revolution-sensor problem.
The cause of the recall is a malfunction of a rotating sensor (cam angle sensor and crank angle sensor) of certain engines, which may cause the engine to stop suddenly or not restart.
Nissan SA said in a statement: “It (the problem) is not a safety critical issue. The time required to take corrective action is less than an hour per vehicle”.
Vehicles sold in South Africa that are affected by the recall include the two- and 2,5-litre petrol-engined X-Trail and the 1,6- and 1,8-litre Almera saloon. The technical problem concerns a batch of faulty components and does not affect all X-TRAILs and Almeras sold in South Africa, the company said.
Owners of affected Nissans will be contacted to make arrangements for the faulty sensor to be replaced. Owners can contact the Nissan Customer Care Hotline toll-free number for further details. The number is 0800 647726 (0800 NISSAN) and two additional numbers that have been made available are 0800 111751 and 0800 111754.
“We have undertaken this recall in the interests of our customers in order to ensure the safety and quality of our products. The recall is in line with Nissan’s policy of utmost transparency with its stakeholders,” Mike Whitfield, sales and marketing director at Nissan SA, said at the weekend.
