A motorist in East London had a nasty shock at the weekend when he discovered that he could not use his wife’s driver’s licence. He believed that a marriage in community of property entitled him to use her licence.
According to the , the motorist was stopped at the Tsolo junction between Umtata and Tsolo and asked for his driver’s licence. He then produced his wife’s licence, explaining that he did not have one, and used his wife’s.
The official told the man he had to have his own licence and the motorist produced his marriage certificate to prove he was married in community of property. He said that meant what belonged to his wife also belonged to him.
The motorist was fined R700 for driving without a driver’s licence and his wife was fined R200 for allowing an unlicensed person to drive her vehicle.
Provincial transport department Tsepo Machaea warned that there would be regular checks for the new credit-card licence and excuses would not be accepted.
