The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) has prepared a document listing new issues that it wants to raise at the national bargaining conference in April.

According to , Numsa has said in its national bargaining document that it wants motor industry wages to be linked to CPIX (consumer price inflation excluding mortgage costs) four weeks’ paid annual leave, six months’ maternity leave paid in full, and the establishment of an agency shop agreement ensuring that non-union members pay a levy to unions operating in the sector.

“It is becoming visibly clear that the wage increases are not keeping up with inflation. Also, we estimate that unemployment will rise to 41,7 percent in 2003,” the document read.

The newspaper reported that Numsa also said it wanted an entitlement fund to be created that will help improve retrenched workers’ severance packages. They recommend that all employers add a minimum of 10 cents an hour for each employee to the fund.
