Land Rover has divulged technical details of its 2013 Range Rover models, including engine specifications, ahead of the car’s official Paris Motor Show debut.
Three engines will be available, two of which will find their way into models destined for our market:
The entry-level offering is a 3,0-litre V6 twin-turbo diesel developing 190 kW at 4 000 r/min and 600 N.m of torque at 2 000 r/min. According to Land Rover this units raft of fuel-saving measures, including start/stop, helps it return an average fuel consumption figure of just 7,5 L/100 km. This engine will not be offered locally.
In terms of the local engine line-up, it’s going to be an all-V8 affair headed up by the mighty 5,0-litre supercharged V8 developing 373 kW and 625 N.m and the 4,4-litre TDV8 unit with 250 kW and 700 N.m on tap. Mated, as all of the engines are, with a new 8-speed ZF transmission the TDV8 returns a claimed 8,82 L/100 km and emits 229 g/km of CO2.
Later in the year, Land Rover will introduce a hybrid diesel V6 (248 kW/558 N.m) to certain markets. It’s being pitched as the ‘world’s most capable Hybrid’ and will make allowances for wading ability.
The firm claims that the new Range Rover is the first vehicle in its class with an all-aluminium monocoque body structure that is roughly 180 kg lighter than the previous model’s steel body construction.
Land Rover’s fifth-generation air suspension features aluminium double-wishbones at the front and a multi-link design at the back. The setup is overseen by an adaptive damping system that monitors the road conditions and adjusts the dampers accordingly by controlling the pressure in the air springs. Land Rover is reportedly benchmarking its ride quality against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
The new car will stay true to the marque’s reputation for crushingly capable off-road ability thanks to a ride height that has been raised by 18 mm to 297 mm up front and 301 mm at the rear. In addition to a wading depth that has increased to 900 mm, the new model’s wheel travel of 597 mm gives it genuine rock-hopping ability. The new Terrain Response 2 system also features an ‘auto’ setting that scans the oncoming terrain and shuffles between five off-road presets depending on the nature of the obstacles being traversed.
Among the comfort and convenience features offered in the new Range Rover are:
• keyless entry, soft door close with power latching, power upper and lower tailgates, cooler compartments, and electrically deployable towbar
• Meridian surround sound music systems with audiophile-quality sound
• Voice control and connectivity
• climate control – including the powerful four-zone system and Park Heater (pre-heats or cools the car when parked and can be set via a timer)
• upgraded seating with luxurious new features such as multi-mode massage
• LED cabin mood lighting
Being a Range Rover these features, and a host of others listed in the attached press release, are packaged in a larger cabin that can be trimmed with a vast variety of leather and wood finishes (read 17 interior themes, 3 veneers, 3 headlining colours).
On the driving dynamics front, the new Range rover bristles with such technologies as:
• Two-channel Dynamic Response active lean control, and Adaptive Dynamics with continuously variable damping
• Electric Power Assisted Steering, which enables Park Assist – the latest automated technology to help drivers parallel park their car in tight urban parking spots
• Adaptive Cruise Control – with new Queue Assist feature which allows the system to continue functioning at low speeds and down to a complete stop
• Intelligent Emergency Braking (including Advanced Emergency Brake Assist) – to help drivers avoid a collision if the traffic ahead slows quickly or another vehicle suddenly moves into their lane
• Blind Spot Monitoring – with new Closing Vehicle Sensing feature to detect vehicles which are closing quickly from a further distance behind
• Reverse Traffic Detection – to warn drivers of potential collisions during reversing manoeuvres
• Surround Camera System – with T Junction view, Trailer reverse park guidance, and Trailer hitch guidance.
