Entering the second year of a four-championship season partnership with the F1 administration, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has the exclusive rights to develop the franchise for the PS2. The result, offers a variety of gameplay modes and four levels of difficulty.
Providing a completely immersive gameplay experience, yet still offering pick-up-and-play accessibility, Formula One 04 allows players to participate in all the action of the F1 season – 18 races across four continents and 16 countries, selecting from the 10 official teams and 20 drivers.
Gamers can play as their favourite driver, selected from the 10 official teams’ drivers – or as themselves – with their name lined up on the starting grid next to Schumi and Co.
A full simulation Career mode enables gamers to progress through championship seasons, beginning with offers from the teams at the back of the grid. Apparently, success on the track will attract the interest of more successful teams, while a poor performance may result in the player being fired!
Formula One 04 also introduces Online options to the series for the first time, although the only features confirmed at this time are in the form of time trials against ghost cars to set fastest times for a leaderboard via the PS2 Network Adapter. Offline, between two and four players will be able to take part in split-screen races.
Four historic F1 cars – the Jordan 191, Renault RE20, Lotus 72 and the Williams FW14B – can be unlocked in the career mode of the game and raced in a time trial.
