The Department of Transport will meet provincial transport heads on April 4 to assess whether a national administration fee will be added to the cost of converting to the new driver’s licence.
This fee is likely to be between R500 and R1 000, the department says, to cover additional staff, security and equipment to process the last-minute rush in April.
Lisa Mangcu, manager of road traffic operation police at the Department of Transport, told CARtoday.com the conversions were not going well. “It’s very bad. We are averaging 3 000 applicants a day,” he said. Mangcu said earlier this month that in order to make the end of April deadline the departments needed to process 33 000 applications a day.
Meanwhile, Tshwane motorists who have yet converted need not stand in a long queue. They can make an appointment, but at a price.
It will cost R200 extra for an appointment on weekdays or Saturdays and R400 on a Sunday, the Tshwane metropolitan police said in a statement.
This will be added to the R300 administration fee Gauteng authorities implemented this week. A motorist who has not yet converted and makes a Sunday appointment will then have to pay just over R800, including the R122 conversion cost.
Tshwane residents wishing to make an appointment can telephone (012) 308-7098.
