The Opel Corsa OPC, one of the hot hatch contenders in the April’08 issue of CAR magazine, will soon be available in South Africa. General Motors SA will make this model available in Opel dealerships from mid-April.Based on the Corsa three-door sport model, the OPC packs 141 kW from a 1,6-litre turbocharged and intercooled engine. This unit reaches its maximum power output at 5 850 r/min, while maximum torque of 230 N.m is available from 1 980 to 5 800 r/min. The overboost system on the OPC makes an extra 36 N.m available, pushing the torque standing to 266 N.m. Drive is sent to the wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.
All of this combined with an overall weight of 1280 kg, allows the OPC to sprint form zero to 100 km/h in a claimed time of 7,2 seconds and can carry on to reach a top speed of 225 km/h. Opel claims that fuel consumption for the OPC stands at 7,9-litres per 100 km.
The OPC is fitted with a electro-hydraulic, variable-progressive steering in order to “provide a true sports car feel”.
The performance orientated OPC features revised front with a new styled bumper with aero gills. The rear view also has gills, as well as a dark-shaded diffuser, while the side view is dominated by chunky side sills. A roof spoiler adds to the sportiness of the OPC. Other unique styling features include “distinctive side mirrors” and 18-inch alloys that both have a triangular design motif.
The interior is packed with features that are typically OPC – doorsill treatments, chrome finishes on the gauges and the red needle indicators. The leather-covered steering wheel is paired with aluminium pedals and the leather gear knob is intended to add extra sportiness to the interior of the vehicle. The steering is adjustable for both reach and height. Opel paired up with Recaro to create the sports seats fitted in the OPC. The driver’s seat is six-way adjustable. The seats are provided with cut outs to accommodate four point seat belts should the owner wish to fit these.
Interior features include air conditioner with pollen filter, power front windows with one-touch facility, map reading lights (front), MP3 compatible RDS radio/CD combo with seven speakers, steering wheel mounted satellite controls and auxiliary input for MP3/iPod players, speed sensitive central door locking, anti-theft immobiliser with ultra sonic sensor, on board computer; triple information display, tyre deflation detection system, cup holders in the centre console and door pockets.
Safety include front and side airbags for the driver and passenger. In addition, curtain type airbags provide side impact protection. ISOFIX child seat attachments are provided on outer rear seat positions. A full set of driver aids is provided – Brake Assist, Hill Start Assist, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Straight Line Stability Control, Cornering Brake Control, Traction Control, and Cruise Control. The ESP system can be turned off if the driver wishes to do so.
